Want to work as a climbing instructor? New River Mountain Guides is offering the AMGA Single Pitch Instructor Course and Exam at the New River Gorge. This course is design to get you ready to instruct climbing for camps or guides services through the process of instruction and examination. This three day course will prepare you to safely and effectively instruct climbing. The focus is on single pitch technical skills such as:
- Rescue skills
- Teaching
- Risk management.
- Top belay and bottom belay setups
- Rappelling setup
Once you have completed the course, you can take the SPI Exam. The SPI exam is a two day course that evaluates your climbing instructional skills. Once you successful completion of the course and exam you’ll become AMGA SPI Certified by the American Mountain Guides Association.

Pre-requisites for Course In order to take this course, one must meet the following qualifications:
- Have a genuine interest in rock climbing and instructing novices on single pitch crags.
- 18 years of age
- Have 12 month climbing experience.
- Active traditional climber placing artificial protection on lead
- Have lead 15 separate traditional routes of any grade
- Are capable of comfortably climbing 5.8 on top rope
Course and Exam Fees
SPI Course- Varies depending on course provider $450-$500 plus tax
SPI Exam- Varies depending on course provider $295- $325 sales tax
