Bouldering
Boulering at the New River Gorge
NRMG Guide Jeremy Wriston at Meadow Top

One visiting climber to the New once said "Bouldering at the New is like offering candy to a person whose mouth is riddled with cavities." However, most others would agree that the bouldering opportunities at the New are pretty freaking killer.

The sandstone at the New is super solid, so when a chunk does break off, it leaves you with a nice car to house size boulder which makes for excellent boulder problems. Scattered throughout the New are dozens of boulders for you to test your mettle on. Often times they are tucked away in thickets of rhododenderons, and invisible to the lay person.

A new bouldering guidebook was put out last year by local climber Chris Anthony. You can pick up a copy from Water Stone Outdoors, the climbing shop and NRMG headquarts located in downtown Fayetteville, WV. If you'd like a personal guided tour of the boulders feel free to give NRMG a call and we'll hook you up.
