WHERE ARE WE LOCATED?
The New River Gorge National Park is located in Southern West Virginia, one hour to the Northeast of Charleston, WV. The New River Gorge is about a 6 hour drive from 50% of the US population, making us easily accessible from many major metropolitain cities up and down the East coast.

WHERE DO THE KIDS CAMP?
NRMG sets up a permanent "basecamp" at the start of the week that serves as the base of operations for the week. It's in a private campground minutes from the New River Gorge, which has wooded campsites, picnic tables and modern bath facilities. Each camper is responsible for bringing their own tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad etc. (See gear list for exact details on what you are expected to bring.) Since we are "car camping" your camper will only need to set up their tent once at the start of week, which is a stones throw from the vehicles.

WHAT ARE THE SLEEPING ARRANGEMENTS?
Campers sleep in their own tents and are segregated into boys and girls sections. The counselors sleep in their own tent situated between the boys and girls tents. Sharing of tents is not allowed. It is important that everyone gets a good nights sleep and is well rested in the morning. Plus it's nice to have some individual down-time to decompress.

WHAT CAMPING EQUIPMENT IS PROVIDED?
NRMG provides all the necessities for comfortable camp-life:

- Covered cooking tent and tarped areas for hanging out in the mornings and evenings
- Campstoves and cookware for preparing meals
- Lanterns and citronella candles
- Picnic tables
- Dishwashing station
- Large water containers
- Coolers and ice
- Critter proof food bins
- Firewood

WHAT IS THE WEATHER LIKE?
During June and July you can expect warm days and cool nights. It is not uncommon to see an afternoon rainstorm, so a tent with a full coverage rain fly is a must. Average high temperature is 80F degrees, and overnight lows range between 50-60F degrees. Average rainfall is 4 inches a month.

WHAT IF IT RAINS?
Rain happens but it's never been too much of a hinderance. Your counselors/instructors know where all the dry climbs are and which areas dry out first.  We also use the opportunity to rest weary muscles and participate in lessons that don't require being on the rock. For example, a typical rainy day we may learn more about placing artificial climbing gear, building anchors, go rappelling or for a hike while things dry out.  If the rock really gets soaked we will take in a movie at a local theater, visit the indoor climbing gym, go bowling and tour the sites around Historic Fayetteville.

WHO ARE THE COUNSELORS/INSTRUCTORS?
The camp counselors are responsible young adults who are talented climbers and have previous kid experience. We know that they are role models for your kids and that they are there to set a good example in their actions, choice of language, dress and attitude. We staff our camp with 2 counselors (one male and one female) throughout the camp. During the climbing day, they often have an assistant guide to lend a hand with setting up the ropes, take videos and photos and help out however they can. The campers are supervised 24-7 by two counselors, however there are times during the week which may require only one counselor to be on hand (like a group visit to town or a re-supply run). In this case one of the junior counselors will temporarily step in to lend a hand.

WHAT ABOUT BULLYING?
Simply stated bullying will not be tolerated and may be grounds for removal from camp without a refund. That said, our camp is much smaller than some of the other camps you may be considering. We maintain a small group size with a counselor to camper ratio of 1:4 which leaves little room for inappropriate behavior to go un-checked.

CAN YOU ACCOMODATE FOOD ALLERGIES OR DIETARY RESTRICTIONS?
Yes. Meals are thoughtfully planned to satisfy everyone's individual needs and preferences whether is be a food allergy to nuts/wheat/dairy/other or the onset of vegetarianism:) Please make sure you fill out the "Dietary" page of your application thoroughly and with as much detail as possible so we can plan accordingly for your needs.

WHAT IF MY KID GETS HOMESICK?
Being away from home can be challenging for some kids, but it's also an important opporunity for independence and self-discovery. Typically once everyone gets settled in and new friendships are formed the butterflies go away.  We do have a call home night scheduled on Tuesday so you can check in with your camper.  We also have a blog updated daily with photos of your camper so you can stay up on what's going on and see all the fun we're getting into.

WHAT IS THE RATIO OF BOYS TO GIRLS?
Through the years we've been pretty fortunate to have an even mix of boys and girls in each session. If we had to put a number on it, it would be 60% boys to 40% girls. If for some reason, your kid is going to be the only one of their gender in camp, we will notify you ahead of time as soon as possible and give you the opportunity to determine the appropriateness.

WHAT ARE THE TYPICAL AGES OF CAMPERS?
We enroll campers ages 13-18, but the majority of campers tend to fall on the between the ages of 13-16. We know it is a concern that some kids don't want to be "the oldest person at camp." For this reason we invite a chosen few of our return campers to participate as a Junior Counselor. It's a great opportunity for them to learn valuable leadership skills, mentor the younger campers and lead by example.

WHO SHOULD NOT APPLY TO TEEN ROCK CAMP?
Our camp is perfect for psyched teenage climbers who want to challenge themselves in a supportive small group environment. We are not a therapy camp, and kids with special needs or behavioral issues should look at other programs. There are plenty of them out there, but this is not one of them. Kids who have a problem with authority, or are rude and disrepectful of others, those engage in sexual activity, use tobacco or other drugs and alcohol, need not apply.

HOW DO YOU APPLY?
Please email a request for the application and information packet. Please mention the name and age of your child, a short description of their interest in climbing and your preferred dates. Our application is also available for download, but you'll need to email for the current login information.
