NRMG owner Elaina Arenz works as a part-time guide for Juan Mountain Guides. If Elaina isn't available to work with you, SJMG has a whole cadre of excellent guides who can teach you the ins and outs of ice climbing. The Intro to Ice Climbing program is a good place to start. No previous experience is necessary and all equipment is provided.
The guides enjoy teaching people how to climb, not just how to follow a guide all day. Climbing movement and technique, gear use, and decision making are all taught and tailored to an individual’s pace.
This course take place in the Ouray Ice Park, and begins on low-angled terrain and ventures onto steeper terrain as climbers’ comfort levels increase.
By the end of this course you will be familiar with setting a top-rope in a sling shot setting, confidently belay and lower a climber, be able to utilize effective climber communication terminology, and be able to climb Grade 3-4 ice climbs.
