New River Mountain Guides is always seeking AMGA Certified SPIs or higher to immediately fill several positions for the upcoming guiding season which runs from March 1-November 30.

 

At New River Mountain Guides, we make it our mission to provide our clients with unforgettable experiences rock climbing in the New River Gorge National Park. Our expert climbing guides and instructors are passionate about rock climbing, and we offer personalized tours that cater to all levels of experience, from novice to expert.

We offer a variety of services, including half-day beginner lessons, full-day private guiding, and specialized courses. Whether our clients are first-time climbers or seasoned outdoor enthusiasts, we’ll make sure they’re in good hands every step of the way.

Compensation is dependent on the level of AMGA Certification and training. We offer increases in base wage when working with groups versus individuals. Those wages range from $125-150 for full-day trips, with the opportunity to earn more for higher ratio days and overnight summer camp work.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE:
-21 years or older, active climber with at least 3 years of personal climbing experience.
-AMGA SPI Certified is a must.
-Wilderness First Aid and CPR Certified
-LNT Online Awareness Certificate of Completion
-Able to lead 5.9 and inspire confidence, able to top rope 5.10 or higher
-Some previous instructional experience is preferred, but we will train if needed.
-Familiar with the New River Gorge and surrounding areas.
-Available on weekends and at a minimum be willing to commit to being on the schedule 3-5 days/week.
-Available for work throughout the entire season, but especially during our peak months of June-August.
-Have your own transportation and mobile device.
-Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
-Works well with others, is flexible, self-motivated, and able to problem-solve.

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
-Pre-trip client communication to determine goals and learning outcomes.
-Deliver high-quality instruction to our clients in a variety of topics such as intro to outdoor climbing, climbing movement, and technique, gym to crag, learn to lead sport and trad, anchor building, best practices for rappelling, multi-pitch skill preparation, and tour de NRG classics.
-Completing post-trip reports.
-Risk management as it pertains to the single-pitch instruction environment.
-Overnight supervision for our Teen Rock Camp program which runs 4 weeks of the summer.

TO APPLY:
  1. Email your AMGA SPI Certificate, work resume, and a list of your top 10-20 notable climbs you’ve redpointed. Include the name of the climbing area, route name, grade, and date climbed.
  2. A letter of introduction describing why you’d be a good fit for the team. Tell us about yourself, and any relevant climbing and instructional experience you may have.
  3. We’ll review your submitted information, schedule a phone interview, and then schedule a day to visit and climb with us to meet you in person.
