FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
We understand that sending your child to an overnight rock climbing camp in the New River Gorge is a big decision. Our goal is to create an environment where teens can grow in confidence, independence, and outdoor skills while parents feel comfortable knowing their child is supported by experienced professionals.
1
Is Teen Rock Camp safe for teens?
Safety is our top priority at Teen Rock Camp in the New River Gorge. All instruction is led by AMGA Certified Single Pitch Instructors who are trained in professional risk management, climbing systems, and youth supervision. We maintain a 4:1 camper-to-guide ratio with a maximum of 8 campers per session, allowing for close supervision and personalized instruction. Campers are taught how to identify hazards, understand climbing systems, and make responsible decisions in an outdoor climbing environment.
2
Do campers need outdoor climbing experience?
No outdoor climbing experience is required. Most campers come to us with indoor climbing gym experience, often through recreational programs or USA Climbing teams. Our program is specifically designed to help young climbers transition from indoor climbing to outdoor rock climbing safely and confidently. Campers will learn essential outdoor skills such as anchor awareness, route management, and crag safety.
3
What gear is included in the camp?
Teen Rock Camp is an all-inclusive climbing program. We provide all necessary technical climbing equipment, including helmets, harnesses, climbing shoes, ropes, and hardware. Campers only need to bring personal items such as clothing, sleeping gear, and camping essentials. If a camper prefers to use their own climbing gear, they are welcome to bring it.
4
How strong or experienced do climbers need to be?
Campers should have some prior climbing experience, typically from an indoor gym or youth climbing team. They do not need to climb at an advanced level. Our instructors tailor coaching to each climber’s ability, helping them improve technique, movement skills, and confidence on real rock. The program is designed for motivated climbers who want to learn outdoor climbing skills, regardless of their current grade level.
