CAMPER PROFILE:

This overnight camp is suitable for co-ed teens age 12-17* who are avid indoor gym climbers and seek opportunities to advance their outdoor climbing skills. *(Mature 11 year old kids who turn 12 in the same calendar year are welcome to apply.)

Our typical camper is an avid indoor climber who participates on their local climbing team at the recreation or competitive level. They are psyched on climbing and want to immerse themselves in a week (or two) of outdoor climbing at the world renowned New River Gorge.

We'll lay a solid foundation of climbing skills with an emphasis on safety and best practices. Campers will learn to advance their climbing technique, knowledge of gear and equipment, the importance of ethics, teamwork, problem-solving, and trust. Our campers learn the following:

-outdoor lead climbing

-anchor setup and cleaning

-introduction to trad gear placement

-crack climbing technique

-stick clipping

-projecting skills

-resting strategy and conserving energy

-rappelling best practices

Campers spend the week camping out under the stars at the American Alpine Club Campground with access to hot showers, flush toilets, and running water. They will pitch their tents at our base camp, and then launch out to a new climbing area every day. The evenings are spent sharing climbing stories around a campfire with s'mores. Tall tales are guaranteed.

Return and experienced campers ages 16-17 are encouraged to participate in a Junior Counselor position. They will have the added responsibility of mentoring the younger campers and helping with facilitating the group experience throughout the week. Please inquire if you are interested in this option.

OUR STAFF:

The Teen Rock Camp Counselor/Instructors specialize in teen programs and are American Mountain Guide Association Certified Single Pitch Instructors. They are excellent teachers, mentors, and role models, who lead by example with integrity and respect.

OUR PROGRAM:

This 6-day overnight camp is geared towards giving teens the opportunity to climb outdoors and apply their previous indoor climbing experience to an outdoor setting. Each day we'll go to a new climbing area from the New River Gorge to Summersville Lake to put new skills to the test,

We maintain a low camper-to-guide ratio of 4 to 1 to maximize experiential learning time on the rock. We keep the group size small with a minimum of 4 and a maximum of 6 campers per session. This ensures that each Rock Camper will receive individualized instruction that will help challenge their climbing ability and expand their knowledge of outdoor climbing in an appropriate manner.

SCHEDULE:
  • MONDAY: Campers arrive at noon, get settled into camp, and go through orientation to establish guidelines, expectations, and personal climbing goals for the week. Half-day climbing to get familiar with the New River Gorge.

  • TUESDAY/WEDNESDAY: Climbing around the New River Gorge.

  • THURSDAY: Guided SUP tour on Summersville Lake, and rope swing

  • FRIDAY: More climbing, revisit favorite climbs, and open projects.

  • SATURDAY: Pack up camp and depart for home.
