Rock Climbing Summer Camp
Our camp programs are ideal for kids who are motivated climbers, providing them with an opportunity to experience outdoor climbing, while they learn about the techniques and skills necessary to do so safely.
This camp is suitable for co-ed teens age 12-18 who are avid indoor gym climbers and seek opportunities to advance their outdoor climbing skills. We'll lay a solid foundation of climbing skills with an emphasis on decision-making skills and exercise sound judgment.
Rock Campers will learn to advance their climbing technique, knowledge of gear and equipment, the importance of ethics, teamwork, problem-solving and trust.
Campers spend the week camping out under the stars in a campground with access to hot showers, flush toilets, and running water. They will pitch their tents at our base camp, and then launch out to a new climbing area every day. Campers take turns cooking meals for the group and sharing in camp-life responsibilities. The evenings are spent sharing climbing stories around a campfire with s'mores. Tall tales are guaranteed.
Return and experienced campers ages 16-18 are encouraged to apply for a Junior Counselor position. They will have the added responsibility of mentoring the younger campers and helping with facilitating the group experience throughout the week. Please inquire if you are interested in this option.
The Teen Rock Camp Counselor/Instructors specialize in teen programs and are American Mountain Guide Association Certified Single Pitch Instructors. They are excellent teachers, mentors and role models, who lead by example with integrity and respect.
This 5-day over-night camp is geared towards introducing teens to outdoor rock climbing while reinforcing teamwork and cooperation. Each day we'll go to a new climbing area from the New River Gorge to Summersville Lake to put new skills to the test.
We maintain a low camper to guide ratio of 4 to 1 to maximize experiential learning time on the rock. We keep the group size small with a maximum of 8 campers per session. This ensures that each Rock Camper will receive individualized instruction that will help challenge his/her climbing ability and expand their knowledge of outdoor climbing in an appropriate manner.
MONDAY: Campers arrive at noon, get settled into camp and go through introductions and orientations to establish guidelines, expectations and personal climbing goals for the week. Half day climbing to get familiar with the New River Gorge.
TUESDAY/WEDNESDAY: Climbing around the New River Gorge.
THURSDAY/FRIDAY: Climbing at Summersville Lake and Meadow River Gorge
SATURDAY: Pack up camp and depart for home.
